About the area

A great place to live!

Little Waltham Parish is part of the Borough of Chelmsford, and is a highly sought-after location for home buyers.

The parish wraps around the north and east of the urban area, being separated from it by some fields and a golf course. The majority of the residents live in the main village, which includes a sizeable conservation area and is set in the attractive valley of the River Chelmer. The Parish also comprises the hamlet of Chatham Green off the A131 Braintree Road and a tract of countryside with some scattered housing and farms.

The parish covers an area of about 1200 hectares (about 5 square miles) and has around 600 households, with a total population in the region of 1300. Click here to see a detailed statistical breakdown of the parish, based on the 2011 Census data.

The population of the parish is steadily growing, as a result of the new housebuilding taking place in the east of the parish on the land where the Channels Golf Course was located.
Little Waltham itself is a traditional English village with a wide variety of architectural styles and houses, together with the Norman church of St Martin’s. Little Waltham and neighbouring Great Waltham are referred to in the Domesday Book, which describes the two villages as “Waltham”, which then consisted of several manors. The site of an Iron Age village was excavated when upgrading the main road nearby.

This historic area has many period properties, and Little Waltham parish contains almost 100 Listed Buildings. You can see a list of these by clicking here.

The main village straddles the River Chelmer. Its main street has a number of attractive old houses near the bridge, and a pleasant footpath goes south alongside the river to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, part of which is a nature reserve. The whole Chelmer Valley from Chelmsford to Little Waltham has been designated as a “green wedge” and is the defining landscape feature of the area. It contains a number of important nature conservation areas.

Further afield, the county of Essex is distinguished by its open undulating farmland and provides a broad range of leisure pursuits, including a number of local golf clubs and the nearby Essex coast offering extensive walks, bird watching and sailing.
